USA: Chester County
Chester County is one of three Pennsylvania counties (along with Philadelphia and Bucks Counties) created by William Penn in 1682.During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Brandywine was fought at what is now the southeastern fringe of the county. The Valley Forge encampment was at the northeastern edge.
Extending from Chadds Ford in the south to Bucks County in the north, this historic region, with its broad leafy trees, open meadows, and quiet streams has been known for the tradition of artists who have been moved by the natural beauty of the environment displayed in every season.
Lucius Crowell was first drawn to the area as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Country School in Yellow Springs. After World War II, he returned to live in a 19th century fieldstone farm house adding a modern glass wing that offered a sweeping view of Charlestown Valley.
